Curated by Hilde Jørgensen and Maya Økland

People look upon the world and imagine their own culture’s superiority. In the Nordic Countries this is not an appropriate way of thinking. Even though we know that our democracy is the best, and our society the most developed, open-minded and free. One of the finest places to live, with the State as a protecting web underneath us. How ever some slip through the net. Nordic Art Express presents video art outside the conformity of a self-indulgent lullaby.

Part I

1. Mattias Härenstam (SE) – "Portrait of a smiling man"

An actor has been given the task of trying to keep a broad smile for long as physically possible. Gradually the smile breaks down into an increasingly grotesque grimace.

2. Nina Lassila (FIN) - "Piiskaa! Beat it!"

Nina Lassila is a visual artist working mainly with video and performance. In many of her works she deals with questions of identity – specifically identity affected by social barriers, conventions based on gender and upbringing and cultural differences. The field of her interest spans from cultural & political issues to mumbo jumbo.

3. Sigurdur Gudjonsson (IS) - "Sleep"

Sigurdur Gudjónsson’s visions have always been tinged with dark and surreal nuances, but the aspect of tension and suspension typical of his poetics is expressed here at its apex. The absence of plot and characters, the absence of voices and familiar sounds, the absence of apparent meaning: all presences that are lacking, or better, suspended presences which envelop the spectator in the spirals of a subtle dizziness.

4. Kim S.Groustra (NO), Jas Domicz (PL), Mateusz Sadowski (PL) – "Snowball"

The video was produced during a collaboration workshop between students at the Kabelvåg Filmschool and the Art Academy in Poznan, Poland.

5. Jorunn Myklebust Sivertsen (NO) - "Violent sorrow seems a moderen ecstacy no. 2"

6. Nina Lassila (FIN) - "Woman with knife?"

Part II

7. Johanna Lecklin (FIN) - "There is A Lot of Joy, too"

The story is a fictive dialogue between a boy and his mother. They never meet on the screen, but are projected next to each other. The boy tells about his dreams and the mother about how it is to live with a different child. The script is based on discussions with a boy who has Asperger’s syndrome, which is related to Autism.Bjork

8. Goodiepal (DK) - "Cancer Matrix Sygnok Komputer 1"

Goodiepal or Gæoudjiparl van den Dobbelsteen, whose real name is Parl Kristian Bjørn Vester, is a controversial Danish/Faroese musician/composer wanted by the Danish police authorities for an unsolved theft from the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus

9. Nina Lassila (FIN) - "Girl"

10. Joanna Rytel (SE) - "Flasher girl on tour"

11. Bjork Viggosdottir (IS) – "Lampyriade"
